Road Trip

We%26#39;re off to a wedding in Newport at the end of September and have 3 days to fill before flying back to London from Boston - Can anyone recommend any where we should visit?

Road Trip

OK I%26#39;ll start. I%26#39;m no expert on the Newport area but I have been there many many times. First, the mansions of Newport could take two or three days to see them all. If you have a car, a trip along the RI coast possibly continuing into Connecticut would be a great day trip. Along the way, there are some charming small towns like Wakefield, Narragansett (nice beach here), Point Judith, Westerly, then into Conn. to stonington and possibly over to Mystic. You could also spend a day in Newport, taking a walk on the Marginal Way where you can see some mansions from the ocean side.

Road Trip

OOPS! Just realized that I gave some incorrect info. The walk way is THE CLIFF WALK (not the Marginal Way which in Qgunquit, Maine).

Well there%26#39;s plenty to see and do in Newport- but if you want to go exploring- take the ferry to Block Island, or a quick local drive to: Jamestown, Wickford and Little Compton are beautiful, Providence and the East Side/Federal Hill area would be a quick drive through. Not much between Prov and Boston but you could explore the Cape too on your way back to Boston.

This sounds great what%26#39;s on Block Island? Not too fussed about seeing mansions I see a lot of those on the way to work every morning!

We were thinking of visiting Six Flags but it looks closed when we are there (28th Sept - 5th Oct) Any other water or theme parks nearby?

I%26#39;m no expert on Newport either but we%26#39;ve been a bunch of times and always found plenty to do. The cliff walk is nice, even without the mansions, it%26#39;s a fun walk along the water. I%26#39;m not into touring around in museums but I enjoy the cliff walk and I didn%26#39;t really care for the mansion tours, they are pricey and mostly all of them are empty huge houses.

My favorite thing I%26#39;d done in Newport is go on an America%26#39;s Cup sailboat (it%26#39;s a replica) for a sunset sail around the harbor. It was really nice.

Block Island is more of a summer destination, I went last summer for a day, it%26#39;s got a pretty crowded beach (during the summer) and a small town but I don%26#39;t think there was much to do there. It looked like a fun place to go with a group of people.

You can go to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard by ferry,I%26#39;m not sure where you pick up the ferry though, but I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s far from Newport. They have a few small towns that are nice to walk around.

Waterparks are likely to be closed after Labor day or if they are open, it%26#39;s only based on weather and only during the weekend since the kids that they cater to are back to school following Labor Day (Sept. 1).

You could even walk around Boston for a day.

Thanks for your reply, we%26#39;re now staying in Newport for 2 days for the wedding and then driving to Provincetown to stay there for 3 nights. I%26#39;m looking for a B%26amp;B with a hot tub on a balcony or roof that over looks the cape, I don%26#39;t want much!

We%26#39;ll then spend our last 2 days in Boston before flying home to London :)

Hmm. Nice area to base a road trip from, so if you really find you need to leave Newport and travel the 2 hours it will take you to get to Provincetown on the Cape, well, okay, enjoy. Traffic on the Cape shouldn%26#39;t be the nightmare it is now on weekends. We just got back from a day trip to P-town and love Race point (beautiful dunes, beach), but are tired of the tourist-y town. We%26#39;d go to Watch Hill in Westerly instead - great scenic drive on route 1, beautiful area with a gorgeous, not-crowded beach at Napa tree point. Cute shops. If you%26#39;re in your 20%26#39;s or 30%26#39;s though, stick to Newport and Boston...livelier crowds.
