oh yeah....will also be looking for a good pub in providence

In town on business this week. Only have one night to get out. Looking to get into town in the afternoon...have a few ';pops'; before dinner, walk about, then some nice Italian.....then a few more pops.

Anyone have good suggestions on local pubs. No chains (RiRas) please. Need not be Irish, but I tend to end up there, or kinda dodgy, divey, smoky joints. Just looking for good cold beer, local folks. Not fratty or trendy.

Or, if there is an ';area'; with multiple options fitting that bill, that%26#39;s appreciated. Federal Hill? Areas around the Universities? RISD?

Cheers,

Brendan

Pops?? If you like dodgy, divey, (smoking outlawed) downtown Prov should offer. There are some clubs like Lupo%26#39;s. THe Eastside is cool but can be college.

Here is a link for things going on:

thephoenix.com/Providence/Default.aspx…

I realize this is a little for you but I%26#39;ll throw it up there for future people seeking the same sorta thing.

But I suggest going to RiRa. http://www.rira.com/ good food and cold beer.. Can%26#39;t ask for anything more.. ;o)

Blakes Tavern. Or Finnigans Irish wake

The RISD area is going to attract a young crowd, But Thayer St. has a lot of outdoor seating

Shanghai is a pretty hip local bar, on Thayer st. It%26#39;s on the second story of the building that also houses berks and blaze. Avoid Blaze if at all possible. The other pub I%26#39;d recommend is the penalty box, a hockey bar on North Main street. Really cool people working there. It%26#39;s under new ownership and it%26#39;s not a dive anymore.

  • Can you help me with info re: Newport?

    Hi,

I%26#39;m thinking of taking my husband away for a surprise weekend for his birthday and lately I%26#39;ve been getting suggestions for Newport, RI. (we are in our 30%26#39;s)

We live in the NY suburbs, about 45 minutes - 1 hour outside of NYC and right now I%26#39;m thinking of a weekend away September 5 - September 7, 2008 (Friday night - Sunday).

I%26#39;ve been doing some reading over the last day and like what I see in Spring Street Inn. Can anyone give me any additional information on this place? Rates? I did email them, I%26#39;m just awaiting a response.

In the past, we normally like to park the car and leave it for the weekend and walk everywhere, unless something is really worth to drive to. Can Spring Street Inn provide this convenience? What about other B%26amp;B%26#39;s or even a hotel that might meet our needs. I%26#39;m up to spending at least $200, but not $250 (if I can help it).

Besides visiting a mansion or 2, what things are there to do during the day? Are there any local attractions that would make a fun filled day?

I%26#39;m sorry for the basic questions, but I%26#39;m just getting familiar with this area as I%26#39;m just now starting my research.

Thanks for any and all of the help you can spare.

Can you help me with info re: Newport?

Well, the Spring Street Inn has free parking, so that%26#39;s a plus. Can%26#39;t really give areview, as I%26#39;ve never staayed there and don;t know anyone who has, but it%26#39;s in a good location to walk into town.

Do a search in the Newport forum and you%26#39;ll see lots of suggestions for things to do, restaurants, etc.

but since you%26#39;ll have your car, you%26#39;ll want ot check out Ocean Drive:

    www.oceandrivenewport.com

    and the Cliff Walk

    www.cliffwalk.com

    Plenty of Dining options....check out

    www.gonewport.com

for an overview...they have a lot of links to restaurants and stuff.

Can you help me with info re: Newport?

    Hi,

I haven%26#39;t stayed at Spring Street Inn either, however, with 79 reviews and all 5 stars, it must be doing something right! The location is perfect! I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll be needing the car for 90% of your trip depending on what you want to see. Thames Street and the Harbor is a block away where you will find many of the shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs, and nightlife. A 10 minute walk will bring you to the cliffwalk or the start of Bellevue Ave for the Mansions. The walk down Memorial Blvd will bring you to Easton%26#39;s Beach or (First Beach). Further away and a very short drive are Second Beach and Gooseberry Beach. I love Gooseberry and it%26#39;s one you should check out if the weather%26#39;s good. Another super short drive will take you to Nickerson State Park which is very nice. The only problem you may run into with the Spring St. Inn is your budget. I%26#39;m guessing it will be around $275 per night. Hopefully I%26#39;m wrong. Good luck planning and I hope you make it to Newport. You and your husband will love it.

Thank you both for your responses.

I was thinking that Spring Street will turn out to be that expensive, but I%26#39;m waiting to hear from them. Attwater Villa is another option so I%26#39;m hoping that will work out for us if Spring Street is in fact too much $$.

Thanks for the websites you provided - good stuff on there and thanks for the directional view of everytying, it%26#39;s all been very helpful!

Will, are you confusing Brenton Point State Park with Nickerson State Park down on the Cape...or is there a Nickerson State Park in RI too...?

LOL, What was I thinking? I guess I had the Cape on my mind. Thanks for that correction Milemarker. Definitely don%26#39;t go to Nickerson Park if your in Newport!

I was going to say, I either missed something here in RI, or you%26#39;ve got a very liberal definition of ';super short drive'; LOL....

    wedding rehearsal dinner

Any suggestions for a wedding rehearsal dinner in Newport? Casual, unique, fun, varied menu, 25-30 people. I don%26#39;t want to upstage the casual reception at the Newport Blues Club. Date set is in late October.

    wedding rehearsal dinner

In late October, after Columbus Day, you can have your pick of venues for a rehersal dinner--ranging from larger restaurants that will easily accomodate 25-30 for a private dinner, to some of the banquet hall type facilities. Even smaller restaurants will often close to the public for the evening for a party that quarantees them a large group at that time of year.

Think of such locations as The Cheeky Monkey, the Mooring, the Red Parrot, and even 22 Bowen%26#39;s upstairs. They can all fix you up with interesting menu choices and a casual atmosphere. All are right downtown, within walking distance of the Blues Club.

A clambake is often fun for a rehersal dinner. Contact T.J. McGrath Clambakes and ask them where they can do a clambake for you at that time of year? If not a clambake, you can contact some of the other caterers in town (Blackstone, Plantations) to ask them for locations and menu ideas for a dinner. Caterers are usually more expensive than a restaurant due to the logistics involved, however.

Best choice--find a restaurant you or the bride likes, and negotiate a deal with them for the dinner. It%26#39;s a buyer%26#39;s market after Columbus Day.

    Good luck.

    wedding rehearsal dinner

I was wondering if you have any idea on who good or actually the best cateres in New port would be? Would you choose between Russel Moorings or Blackstone? Any opinion would help. Many thanks

    To answer both questions....

For the rehearsal dinner, look into the 5th Element,

    www.5eri.com

It is definitely ';Casual, unique, fun'; for a ';varied menu'; give them a call or an e-mail...Chris, the head Chef, will work with you to plan something great...

It%26#39;s a very popular place for local 20,30,40,50 somethings....

They%26#39;ll most likely be able to give you most, if not the entire upstairs.

A couple of other places: Perro Salado (Mexican) Brick Alley (American), Sardela%26#39;s (Itlaian)

www.perrosalado.com (site is under construction but there%26#39;s a picture to give you an idea)

    www.brickalley.com

    www.sardellas.com

Also check out www.gonewport.com for more info and links to some more restaurants.

    As far as caterers go:

We used Russell Morin for my wedding and I%26#39;m still getting compliments today....(3 years later...) There was a woman, Kathleen, who had an office in Newport, and dealt with mostl of the Newport events...she used to own Kathleen%26#39;s Catereing in Newport before she sold it to RM but stayed on as a coordinator....I hope she%26#39;s still there, she was great!

We also use them alot at work for corporate events and have never been disappointed.

That%26#39;s not to say the Blackstone is bad or good, just never had much exposure to them.

The original post here was in June of %26#39;05, and the follow-up is current; interesting time delay?

Anyhow, Blackstone Caterers is usually considered to be the best off premises caterer in RI. They do everything from small dinners and weddings to major events of up to 2000 or more attendees. Their kitchen is in Middletown so their food is very fresh, and their service is generally considered to be the best, as is their food.

Russell Morin is located in Attleboro, MA, about an hour%26#39;s drive away, where their kitchen is located. Thus, their food isn%26#39;t always the warmest/freshest by the time it gets to Newport. Their service staff is generally not as well trained and sophisticated as Blackstone%26#39;s. They tend to compete by lower prices, but like most things, you get what you pay for.

Morin isn%26#39;t bad, don%26#39;t get me wrong, but if you want the best you go to Blackstone (and they can be competitive in pricing as well). I know some may disagree, but my husband and I have attended many functions in recent years catered by both firms and the differences are apparent. I%26#39;ve also used both for corporate events and found Blackstone much easier to work with.

i thank you so much for the helpful info and also ask whether you can recommend a good photographer for a rehearsal dinner. Thank you

For a rehersal dinner photographer, contact Kate Whitney Lucey at 401/847-6403.

She%26#39;s a nice person, and an accomplished professional.

    1 day

my wife and I are stopping for 1 day in Providence in late July. Any suggestions? We are basically up for anything! Thanks

    1 day

Start at Roger Williams National Memorial where you will find free parking.Watch 5 min. video, talk to ranger, learn about the founding of RI. Walk up Smith St. to visit State House(m-f), then walk down Francis St. to Waterplace Park and Riverwalk continue to visit First Baptist Church in America(m-f) and walk back to car. Drive to Federal Hill for lunch. Be sure to visit DePasquale Plaza and Venda Ravioli. Drive back to Benefit St. to visit Museum of Art at RISD. Drive around the East Side visiting Prospect Park and Brown University then to the Botanical Center At Roger Williams Park ( not where you began).

Need help getting a ';feel'; for Newport

    Hi,

My husband and I are in our 30s and planning to be in Newport for 4 days prior to a business conference in mid-July. It is the first time that either of us have been there. We are currently planning to stay at the Vanderbilt.

I%26#39;ve done some research, but still don%26#39;t have a good feel for Newport. Should we expect to do a lot of shopping/site seeing, or are there a lot of beach/water activities? Should we be concerned that our hotel doesn%26#39;t have a pool or beach access? It is worth staying somewhere else that does have these amenities?

I%26#39;m guessing that we%26#39;ll do the ocean drive and the cliff walk; maybe go to a mansion. Is doing a side-trip to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard a good day trip, or should we do something closer?

Also, can anyone recommend a restaurant for my husband%26#39;s birthday? I%26#39;m looking for someplace that%26#39;s upscale, but still has a young, hip and fun vibe.

Need help getting a ';feel'; for Newport

Newport is good for all of the things you mentioned (shopping, sightseeing, beaches, water activities...) I would only be concerned about the beach/pool thing if it is something you can%26#39;t live without (but sounds like you can) Not many places have ';beach access%26#39; as they aren%26#39;t located on the beach. You could drive out to Second Beach or Gooseberry Beach if you wanted to spend time at the beach. Only a few hotels have pools and most aren%26#39;t even outside (the season is just too short) Vanderbilt Hall is a nice place within walking distance to lots, but still up a quite street to escape the crowds and noise.

IMO the Vineyard is too far and the logistics just too much to do for a day trip. (There is a fast ferry that leaves out of North Kingstown, RI to the Vineyard)

Block Island is more manageable for a day trip if you are looking to get away...a ferry leaves from Newport or you could drive down to Point Judith for more options.

Plenty of restaurants in newport. Clarke Cooke House, The Mooring, 22 Bowens, Black Pearl, West Deck, Asterisk all are good, not too stuffy. (all of them also double as bar/lounges in the evening)

Castle Hill and the Spiced Pear are upscale, but have varying degrees of young and hip vibe....but their settings are nice.

Also the 5th Element is a popular place with 30 - 40 somethings....it%26#39;s food is probably not as upscale as you%26#39;d want for your husband%26#39;s birthday but good none-the-less...especially their wood grilled pizzas. Their bar is popular at night.

    Not sure if you%26#39;ve been to Annapolis,MD before, but I heard somebody once somewhat accurately describe Newport as ';Annapolis on steroids';....as far as nightlife, water activities, shopping, etc....to help give you a ';feel';

    Marriot Hotel in Providence, RI

is that a good hotel and is it in good area?

we%26#39;ll be driving there but we would prefer to walk around as much as we can. are there good restaurants, shopping and things like that?

    is there a beach nearby?

    thanks so much!

    Marriot Hotel in Providence, RI

There is a Mariott Courtyard right downtown near the Mall and Waterplace Park. There is also a standard Mariott up behind the Capitol. It%26#39;s a little bit of a walk to downtown from there but doable, and a RIPTA trolley stops right there as well.

Lots of restaurants %26amp; shopping downtown and up on the East Side. Federal Hill is great for Restaurants.

Better beaches are down in the Southern part of the State....Newport, Narragansett, South County etc...

  • New England in 5 days

Not sure where to post this, so will start here. We are flying up to New York in Sept. to visit our son. Monday-Friday, we would like to rent a car and see some of New England.

We thought we would take a train to somewhere in Conn. and rent a car. I know I want to stop in Newport, RI and do the cliff walk, maybe a mansion. I want to drive through cape cod, salem, and ipswich. I don%26#39;t have to make long stops there. I can skip Boston. I would like to make it into Maine and of course have lobster. It would be nice to drive across New Hampshire and into Vermont. Possibly Ben and Jerry%26#39;s and the Cabot Creamery. Of couse see the scenery. Possibly stop in Woodstock on the way back to New York.

    Is this doable?? Any suggestions?

    Thanks in Advance.

    New England in 5 days

This is a good itinery, but you would probably be a bit much to say the least. One day to get to Npt, one day to get to the Cape and back through Boston, then one day for Salem, Ipswich, by the time you get to ME it will be evening and you%26#39;ll just have to leave the next morning to do the rest. Maybe forget Ipswich and Salem, and Woodstock too. If you want to go all the way out on the Cape that would just take one day. If you get to NH I would suggest route 25 south of the White Mountains, pretty NE country.
