where to stay and what to do for 3 days

2 fifty something couples are planning to make a 3 day stay around Rhode Island, having had 3 days in New York and 4 days in Boston. Would like to include a day trip to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard. Would welcome ideas re where best to stay and what to do to make the most of our time there

Thanks

Chris

I would stay in Newport for the 2 nights/3 days you will be in RI. This would be a good spot even if you wanted to venture out to say, Wickford (quaint New England town on the water,) or Narragansett (great town beach and views along the pier walk). I would not recommend a day trip to the Vineyard but rather Block Island. A day trip from Newport area to Block Island is more feasible with a shorter ferry ride than the Vineyard. BI has beaches, a small downtown for shopping, great bike riding (a little hilly) or you can rent a moped to see the island.

In Newport, there are small inns along with a Hyatt and Marriott so depends what you are looking for. You don%26#39;t really need a car in Newport if you stay close to downtown area.

Newport has it all: great restaurants, sites to see, history, beautiful ocean views. It is great to walk around or there is a trolley to take you around. The Newport Mansions are impressive to see. It is hard to believe people lived like this! I think the previous posters idea of going to Block Island is a good one. If interested in gardens see my Newport for Gardeners goList:

Also as the other poster said, Rhode Island is a small state so you could drive up to Providence or go to another town in not too much time. The Waterfire event in Providence is supposed to be amazing (am going to try to get to it myself this year).

hi ChrisCambridge, hubby and I both in 50%26#39;s stayed in Newport for a couple of nights 2 years ago, we loved it. You just gotta go and see The Breakers, one of the Newport Mansions, it was built for the Vanderbilts late 19th century as a SUMMER HOME!!! as the Yanks say - it is AWSOME. The other Mansion we visited was the Marble House, just absolutely fabulous. Please don%26#39;t miss the Mansions as nobody else I know has been to them. Enjoy
