Airport to AMTRAK ?

My wife and I are flying into PVD on Wed 9/26 and staying in Newport for 2 nights and then going on to Boston for 3 nights. I%26#39;m trying to figure the most economical way to do the transfers (i.e. PVD%26gt;Newport, Newport%26gt;Boston, etc.) I%26#39;ve looked into renting a car for 2 days ($80) vs. Cozy Cab Shuttle ($80) but can%26#39;t figure how we would get from Providence airport to the AMTRAK station (which I believe is ';downtown Providence';. We can get the train into Boston for $32. We can rent a car In PVD and return to Boston Logan for $165.

I guess what I need to know to figure this out is......how far from the airport is it to the AMTRAK station and how much would a cab cost??

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated..........

Airport to AMTRAK ?

From the Providence Airport you want to take the Cozy Airport Shuttle, NOT A COZY or another service, CAB!!!

The airport shuttle is $20 per person. It usually runs on the hour out of the baggage claim area, but call ahead to make sure. All cabs will run you around $80.

Once in Newport you can buy a ticket on Bonanza that is very inexpensive, approximately $16 - $20, to bring you to Boston. The trip is only 1 hour and 45 minutes. Pretty fast for bus service. It would almost take that long by your own car. You can pick up Bonanza at the Newport Visitors Bureau in the bus depot at the back of the building and it drops you at Boston%26#39;s South Station, a central point.

Depending on when you come you can take public trolleys in Newport, or rent a moped or two person pod scotter or bicycles. You could also rent a car while in Newport. Thrifty will deliver the car to you and you have the luxury of leaving it in Newport that will cost less money.

For a scenic tour of Newport take the historic trolley tour from the Visitors Center. Fantastic tour and you can fit in a tour of the Breakers Mansion with it also.

Airport to AMTRAK ?

I agree....shuttle from PVD....Bus up to Boston.

Both cities are very walkable and have good public transportation.

Since the OP brings up a good question, I wondered if anyone knows the answer.

I heard a few years ago that the plan is to have AMTRAK stop at the airport or at least make a direct link from the airport to the downtown train station. Does anyone have any current information on this?

Just wondering what the status of that project is.

Fall of 2009 is the new target date, but that seems agressive....ground hasn%26#39;t even been broken yet.

The latest hurdle was Amtrak allowing the MBTA Commuter trains to use their tracks.

My wife and I are flying into PVD on September 19, stay on Cape Cod for a week or so and then go from PVD to NYC on September 29 or 30. I explored air fares but they are too high. Can we take the same shuttle and then get an AMTRAK to NYC. I read that the fare would be about $102 per person.

Then I will need to figure out how costly it would be to get from Penn Station to the upper East side.

Thanks.

Not sure what shuttle you are refering too....the only shuttle mentioned is the shuttle from PVD to Newport, and there is no Amtrak service from Newport.

You could take a bus or cab to the Providence Train Station.
