Winter in Newport?

We are considering a long weekend in Newport at the end of January. How active is the town? Are most of the shops open? Looking for advice for comfortable, yet romantic lodging?

Winter is a much quieter time in Newport. Most restaurants and shops are open. Some restaurants have specials during this time. I think it is a great time to visit. Romantic. The best lodging in Newport is Castle Hill Inn. It is a bit pricey although more reasonable during the winter. Francis Malbone is nice as well but the setting at Castle Hill is quite spectacular.

Thank you. Both properties look great. Their cancellation policies would necessitate our taking a chance on a last minute reservation due to an evolving health situation of a family member at home. In the meantime, I think we will form a back-up plan with reservations in New York City.

I have been in Newport in January...the same last weekend and will be again this year. It IS much quieter and colder...but most things ARE open. Have you looked at the cliffside inn? It appears lovely and quite reasonable off-season. I will be there in the Attic Room.

You should be able to get reservations last minute this time of year. Try Castle Hill, prices are reasonable this time of year. My husband and I will be there this weekend. We are looking forward to a quiet, romantic time.

You are all so helpful! Yes, I had looked at Cliffside Inn and the other inns in the same group. Castle Inn and Francis Malbone are also of great interest to us.

As much as I love NYC, we really would love the quiet of Newport this time of year.

What about November/December? I know the weather these days is unpredictable in most places, but generally speaking how is it in Nov./Dec.? Very cold?

We are debating between Chanler and Castle Hill, but prices at Chanler don%26#39;t go down far enough until December. Will it be too cold/snowy to be outside at that time of year? We can get a reasonable rate at Castle Hill in mid November.

Newport can be cozy and romantic in winter; especially in December. February has the Newport Winter Festival. January is definitly the slowest month; while many shops and restaurants are open, many also take a few weeks off during January.

Oh the weather...sometimes Dec can still be in the 50%26#39;s. Not said for Jan or Feb- no...cold, and windy. Although we usually don%26#39;t get dumpings of snow like in the interior.
