martha's vineyare

We are planning a trip that includes New York, Boston and Southern Vermont. We would also like to visit Martha%26#39;s Vineyard. Is it possible to do this as a day trip from Boston or would it be best to include 1 or 2 nights in the Cape Cod area. If so, where would be the best place to stay e.g. Newport, Hyannis, Chatham etc to make the best of our time there?

Many thanks, Chris from Cambridge, England

Well, the easiest way to make it as a day trip would be to leave from Falmouth (Woods Hole) You could make it as a day trip from Boston, it%26#39;s a long day though....alternatively you could leave from Newe Bedford as well. An overnight on the Cape would definately make it a bit easier, and you could enjoy some time exploring the Cape as well...either Hyannis or Falmouth IMO...you could easlily drive out to Chatham.

Newport is not on the Cape, it%26#39;s about 1 1/2 from the Cape and Boston. Newport is nice in it%26#39;s own right and you could easily spend a day or 2 there with plenty to do, and no ferry ride. I would not suggest Newport for a base to include the Vineyard, although this is a ferry out of N. Kingstown RI.

Hi Chris,

You have two choices for a daytrip to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard from Boston. The first is to drive your car from Boston to Falmouth (Woods Hole), park the car for $12 per day and take the ferry over to the Vineyard. Cost is $15 roundtrip per person.

The second choice would be to take the Peter Pan Bus from Boston to Woods Hole, then hop on the ferry. Roundtrip bus cost is $42 per person.

Either one makes for a long day, but certainly do-able. What I would do and recommend to you is to take either one of those options and spend a night on the Vineyard. Then you could enjoy the island for a couple days without being rushed. It%26#39;s a very nice place to spend a night. It%26#39;s even a better place to spend 2 or 3 nights, but one will give you time to explore the place.

Now if you go and you drink, there%26#39;s only two towns on the island where you can buy or be served alcohol...Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. The rest of the island is dry. You can BYOB but you can%26#39;t buy it or be served it. I like staying in the two wet towns, both are fun and have more nightlife going on.

If you do go, you%26#39;ll love it!

actually falmouth and woods hole are two different ports from the Cape to the island. It takes over an hour to get to the Cape from Boston and then an hour ferry ride depending on which town you%26#39;re coming from. I would suggest driving from Boston and going for an overnight to the Vineyard, and then having lunch or a pit stop on your way there or back in Falmouth or another Cape town!
