I haven%26#39;t seen much about the pro tennis in Newport lately so thought I%26#39;d post a great day experienced yesterday at the Campbell tournament. 5 RI friends and I spent the day in a town 10 degrees cooler than the rest of our muggy, uncomfortable state. Great breeze, which didn%26#39;t effect our enjoyment of the players coping with it on-court. The entire Newport Tennis Casino staff were so helpful, polite and clearly enjoying their jobs that it only added to the fun. Some of the matches were outstanding, and the ones we felt were less so made no difference - you can leave the casino easily to shop within yards of the courts, and pop back in to catch more matches. The Battisone brothers, who made a big splash the day before with their new 2 handled rackets, were outside the casino - great guys, enthusiastic about their game, and so polite and willing to speak with curious fans. Sardello%26#39;s restaurant was in walking distance and although not my favorite Newport restaurant overall, so convenient, with hot simple red sauce meals offered at a 2 for 1 price - we ended up only spending $11 per person! Parking was easily found for the matches by patiently making one circuit down Memorial Blvd., behind the courts and up Bellevue Ave. The 2 hour parking limit was no big deal - just pop out of the casino to move your car and pop back in. So accessible. Gotta love Newport...
Great tennis, great venue
Thanks for posting your experiences! A long time ago I too on a whim went to some tennis matches there. We had excellent seats and it was relatively inexpensive. In our case some of the players we recognized (although not the most famous of the players -- it may have been the tournament we went to being less popular). It was a fun day and like you said we left and came back again. Since it was a while ago that we went I do appreciate your report since it is good to hear that it is still a good deal, fun, etc!
