Hello. We will be arriving by cruise ship. We want to see the coastal area and town and visit a few mansions. Does it make sense to rent a car? Will parking be a problem on a weekday in mid-September?
Does a rental car make sense in Newport?
There is bus-trolley service around town, to the mansions, and Fort Adams State Park. (There%26#39;s also a water taxi to get around). If you had a car you could drive around Ocean (10 mile) Drive, and check out neigboring areas, just for the day there is certainly enough see in Newport itself if you don%26#39;t mind the transit. Mid-september there is metered parking around and some free places; shouldn%26#39;t be too bad though but Newport can still be busy in Sept during the boat show weeks.

For just a day trip from a cruise ship, you would not need to rent a car. There are trolleys that can take you up to the mansions and cliff walk, the rest of the town is walkable. The only thing you wouldn%26#39;t really be able to do is the 10 mile drive, but you%26#39;ll still be able to enjoy nice views while on the Cliff Walk.
