I would like to visit Newport sometime in October. I know the Oktoberbest is the weekend Oct 11-12 and Bowens Wharf Seafood Festival is the next weekend Oct 18-19. But I%26#39;m trying to avoid crowds and still get to see some foliage in Souther RI. would it be worthwhile to visit say after the 20th or does the weather get more chancey? Like I said, I%26#39;m trying to get away from crowds and traffic and just relax for a few days.
I%26#39;ve travelling all thru New England in the fall.
Any suggestions on best timing? Or would late September be better?

Those festivals will not really have an overall impact on the city....if you avoid them, you%26#39;ll avoid any real crowds. The seafood festival is the smaller of the two, really just some restaurants and some entertainment under a tent on one of the wharfs....it%26#39;s a nice little festival to stumble upon, but won%26#39;t crowd the downtown area like say, the Boat Show....also, if you avoid the weekends, you%26#39;ll REALLY avoid any crowds.

As far as the weather goes, here in Southern NE by Halloween the tree colors are on their way out. So the last two to three weeks of Oct are prime. Sept and Oct are nice months here, usually minimal rain, crisp blue skies. But yeah after the 20th it could be cool, or an Indian Summer if you%26#39;re lucky.
My wife and I will be celebrating our first anniversary in newport in late october (24th-27th), our anniversary is on the 27th.
We are staying at the Hotel Viking and plan on doing some mansion tours, the cliff walk, and possibly a sunset cruise.
Any recommendations on which sailing/boat cruises are best?
Thanks in advance.
www.sightsailing.com has always had a great rep, and if anyone sails well into the fall months it would probably be them.
Most if not all cruise companies will be finished by then, if there are any left it will probably only be 1 or 2 so you really won;t have too much of a choise. During the season sightsailer is nice for a newer modern boat, the Madeleine and Adirondack for older schooner type boats.
newport is slowing down, not too crowded now,, a good time to visit. I just got home but from my last trip up there and found the coolest place. Belles Cafe at the Newport shipyard,, you gotta check it out! great food, great atmosphere, totally casual but chic, waterfront dining, kid and dog friendly. My wife and I have never been so relaxed eating out with our kids,,super cool boats,,, and Billy Joel was at the table next to us!
