I%26#39;m visiting Boston for a week (in a week), and I see that I can take the T from Boston to Providence, RI.
I%26#39;m curious where the T will take me in Providence. I know little of Providence, but I%26#39;d like to at least get a quick look at it, and I wonder if I%26#39;d be stranded at the Providence station (I have no car), or if the station is downtown or near interesting things I might be able to walk to?
Thanks for any help. I won%26#39;t be surprised if, being carless, I might get the advice to pass on the trip, but I%26#39;m hoping not. :)
Boston to Providence via commuter rail
It%26#39;s an easy walk from the Providence train station to the historic area, downtown, and Federal Hill. For $5.00 you can buy a public transport pass which allows you to use the Providence trolly lines or any of the buses for 24 hours.

Providence is really not that big of a place and the train station is pretty much right downtown so you can definitely walk around. It%26#39;s a charming little city though and I think would be worth the trip. You can walk along the river and see some of the sights and then have lunch at one of the little bistros. Or, if you can swing it, you could go on a Saturday night and see the Waterfire event. We did that last night and it was really fun. I%26#39;m not sure how late the trains run though so that might not work.
Have fun!
The train station is directly across from the State House and the State House is across from Waterplace Park and the Providence Place Mall. It%26#39;s a short walk to Kennedy Plaza bus terminal and from there you can take the bus places or walk up to historic Benefit Street and Thayer Street/Brown University. Providence is a pretty walkable city. I don%26#39;t drive and I manage to get around in the city with a lot of walking. Bring sturdy walking shoes and be prepared to walk up a few hills if you want to walk.
