Need the RI expert’s advice. Looking to take a weekend trip w/ my wife over President%26#39;s day weekend next year (2/14 - 2/16/09) and was thinking of visiting RI. We haven%26#39;t locked in a specific city but saw a post w/ Newport Festival over that same period of time. I%26#39;m guessing prices would be jacked up for hotels in Newport that weekend.
Question is, since we will only be there over 2 nights, would that be a good spot for that time of year or should we consider another city in Rhode Island. We like quaint towns and shops, with good restaurant selections (not toooo expensive though, pubs can be fun too). Is there typically much snow that time of the year. We like beach/ocean view rooms too even though its out of season so we are really flexible when it comes to travel. Would just like have a fun spot for the time of year we are traveling.
All recommendations welcome and thanks in advance.
February in RINewport will definitely fit your bill as far as Shopping, Restaurants, Pubs, etc.... That weekend, as you mentioned, is the start of Neweport%26#39;s WinterFest and coincides with February Vacation for schools around here (Mass and RI at least)
Hotel prices will be a little bit higher than other dates in the Winter, but still not anywhere near as the Spring, Summer, or Fall. There are many Hotels (Marriott, Hyatt, Newport Harbor Hotel, Hotel Viking) as well as Inn%26#39;s and B%26amp;B%26#39;s to choose from. There are also many discount hotels/motels a short drive away in Middletown.
Generally speaking, Newport doesn%26#39;t get as much snow as the interior portions of the area, it usually starts as snow but turns to rain along the coast....but a storm further out to sea could give us more snow. You just never really know until a few days out, what the forecast will be. (I%26#39;ve seen 60%26#39;s in February before)
You are also just a short drive to other parts of the state if you feel the need to explore.

February in RIThat is the Valentine%26#39;s Weekend so you might not want to wait until the last minute to make reservations.
You may want to check out lodging in Narragansett for reasonable prices. Nice variety of dining options in Narragansett although for cute shops you would want to go to Wickford or Newport.(Newport is only a 17 mi. drive from Narragansett.) If you are a chocolate lover the Blueberry Cove Inn has a chocolate event for guests on those dates.
You could check out www.southcountyri.com for information about the general area.
Hard to tell on the weather. Being close to the ocean tempers the weather unless we have a Nor%26#39;easter blowing in. Generally the South Coast is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer than the forcasts for Providence. Heavy snow is very rare.
