Staying in Boston 1st of Oct for 5 days..thinking of a day trip tp Providence and or Newport I see that Amtrak goes Boston to Providence Is there an easy way to go to Newport from Providence and back or Boston to Providence?
Providence to Newport
Unless there turns out to be a bus from Newport that goes to Prov (I don%26#39;t know, I always drive back and forth), I think you%26#39;re ';stuck'; driving either back to Boston directly from Newport or through Providence. Hopefully someone will chime in but you could google busses and see what comes up. Its not exactly ';easy'; in that there is no big highway (fortunately!!) to Newport from anywhere, only smaller roads with some traffic lights. If its your first trip, it will be well worth it for you, both the city and Newport are wonderful
Providence to Newport
There is a bus from Boston (South Station MBTA Red line) to Newport visitor center. Check it out here:

Select Boston South Station for start
Select Newport for end
Once in Newport there is a very good shuttle bus (that leaves from the Newport Gateway Visitor center) to get you around or you can also walk many places. The shuttle is quite good if you want to do the Cliff Walk (walk along the ocean with magnificent views). You use the shuttle to get to one end of the walk and then you won%26#39;t have to do a round trip on the walk (3 miles versus 6 miles!)

From the pulldown menu pick the various Newport shuttle bus routes. 67 Bellevue will bring you to the mansion area and near to the cliff walk. Or there is a note to check out route 61 for start of cliff walk. You can print maps and schedules from the above.
Check out Boston Logan as a start on PeterPan -- there is an earlier bus than from South Station.
You can take an MBTA Commuter Train from Boston to Providence. You can also take a ferry from Providence to Newport until October 15th.
There are also buses directly from Boston to Newport, bypassing Providence.
there is a ferry from Providence to Newport. Not fast but scenic. http://www.ripta.com/schedules/ferry.php
