Suggestions for hotel accom etc over xmas
If ';winter wonderland'; is your preference, going to places like Newport, Providence or Salem are unlikely to give you what you seek. It%26#39;s unlikely they%26#39;ll have snow on the ground, though it is *possible'; a ';northeaster'; storm could dump a lot of snow....it%26#39;s not likely.
If you want winter wonderland, you need to go to places like Stowe, Vermont, and you will need to rent a car to get there and to properly get around and enjoy them.
The Biltmore in Providence is old-fashioned, a classic 1930s style hotel...but make sure you get the best room they offer, or you might be disappointed in the quality of your accommodations. The Westin might be a better choice, IMHO, despite its ';chain'; status.

No, Newport does not have train service from Boston.
You%26#39;ll have to rent a car, or take a bus.
There are regularly schduled buses from South Station in Boston right to Newport. Once in Newport, you can take trolleys out to the mansions, which will be decorated for the holidays.
Most of the restaurants and shops will be open that week.

Take the bus to Newport and skip the Providence hotel scene altogether. You probably won%26#39;t find much snow but Newport will be well dressed for the holidays. Check out the mansions and some of the mansion in-costume dinners.
I%26#39;d also encourage you to check out some of the B%26amp;Bs as an alternative to hotels. Some are far more luxurious than hotels yet offer reasonable rates for the amenities offered.
Once you are in Newport you could get to Providence by public transit if you are quite determined or just rent a car for one day to run about. You could just as easily spend three days exploring Newport though.
Christmas in Newport is a great time of year. There could be snow, after all this is New England, but you can%26#39;t count on it like up North, which is really more of a ski scene.
Newport has a lot to offer, right through the holidays. The many Colonial sites in the city are decked out and it is very cozy and beautiful. You won%26#39;t be disappointed.
I haven%26#39;t been there during the Christmas season, but my family and I have stayed at the Biltmore three times this year and I would imagine it%26#39;s beautiful at Christmas. It%26#39;s old world charm along with great service in a beautiful building. I love Newport, but I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s a Christmas location for that winter wonderland setting you%26#39;re looking for.
