  • Christmas dinner in Newport

We are traveling to Newport for Christmas and are looking for a restaurant open for Christmas dinner. We are a party of 5 adults. Holiday ambiance and not terribly overpriced ($45)entrees would be our preference. Suggestions?

    Christmas dinner in Newport

The hotel restaurants are usually always open for holidays (Fathoms at the Marriott has been getting some good reviews), while the independent restaurants are hit or miss, you have to call ahead to ask if they will be open for the day on Christmas.

Look on Trip Advisor for the type of restaurnat you might enjoy, then contact them to ask if they are open that day. I%26#39;d also suggest reservations, since those that are open may be busy.

One Bellevue Restaurant inside Hotel Viking is also offering Christmas dinner. App, Entree and Dessert for $50. It has ambiance and the food is very good as well.

    Best Coffee In Newport?

Leaving tomorrow. Can%26#39;t wait! My girlfriend LOVES coffee like nobody I ever met. Who makes the best coffee and Cappucino?

    Thanks,

    Best Coffee In Newport?

I%26#39;ll put a vote in for Jonathan%26#39;s Ocean Coffee Cafe at Washington Square.

    Best Coffee In Newport?

Not a coffe drinker, so i can%26#39;t really help, but for a nice view, there is a small coffee shop at the end of Bannister%26#39;s Wharf, there is a small shop called the Coffee Grinder, nice Adirondak Chairs overlooking the Harbor....even if you don%26#39;t get your coffee there, you can still sit there....bundle up though, but it%26#39;s supposed to be sunny this weekend.

    www.bannisterswharf.net

milemarker is correct.. the coffee grinder at the end of banisters wharf is the best spot for a coffee in newport.

Just back. The coffee grinder had the best view but the worst Capuccino I have ever had

That%26#39;s too bad. I was going to recommend a new little cafe on Spring St. right up from your hotel which I heard from some afficionados has very good coffee. The places around the tourist areas can be hit or miss; it takes some skill to make a good cappucino.

I adore Newport and can%26#39;t wait to go back. Saw the coffee place on Spring St. and was very close to stopping. Thanks for the tip. Next time.

Stayed at The Francis Malbone Inn again last weekend. Great time. The Tavern at the Black Pearl had great chowder. Dinner at SPARK was really good. Try the shrimp nachos. The 3 mansions decorated for xmas were great. Have never been at xmas time before. The Breakers was truly breathtaking. If you are considering going during this xmas season do yourself a favor and go. Get the winter passport which includes all 3 mansions for only 25.00. What a bargain! Thanks to all who post and give helpful advice.

Thanks for the trip report. I%26#39;m pretty sure that Tucker%26#39;s and Spark have the same shrimp tacos. The former chef at Tucker%26#39;s, Sue Zinno, left to head the kitchen at Spark and makes them there now. Tucker%26#39;s still makes them as well. They are very, very good. They%26#39;re called Thai Shrimp Nachos at Tucker%26#39;s. The same at Spark?

    Just back

NewyorkChubby - glad you had a great time! Good tip on the lodging. We are looking for a new B%26amp;B as the one we used to go to changed hands. It is true about the Breakers! Fabulous decorations. Of course it is the most opuluent, over the top of the mansions so it is what you%26#39;d expect.

Also if people get the 3 mansions Winter passport and aren%26#39;t able to use all 3 tickets, a good thing to note: the tickets are undated and can be used in future years during winter time. We did this with an extra ticket we weren%26#39;t able to use several years ago and used it this time to view the Elms decorated for Christmas. I think this is true of all the mansion tickets that they don%26#39;t expire and can be used in other years but must be used in appropriate season that is listed on the ticket.

I know they are Sue%26#39;s recipe but they tasted better at Spark. The nacho part was tastier there. I thought they were called Nacho%26#39;s at both places. Thanks for the tip about the tickets. I forgot they honor them for a year. I loved room 3 at the Mansion but we stayed in room 2 this time. In the old part of the mansion on the second floor with fireplace.

    I LOVE NEWPORT!

things to do in newport for kids

Hi my family and I are going to Newport the Saturday after Christmas and kids are coming. I was wondering what some good activities are for a 12 year old and a 8 year old.

things to do in newport for kids

As a teen I always thought it was fun to walk around the wharves, docks, and shops at Bowens Wharf %26amp; Brick Market. There%26#39;s also Ryan Family Amusement Arcade right downtown. Newport is pretty fun for all ages, I think. Or you could go to Fort Adams.

things to do in newport for kids

Whenever we have out-of-state visitors with kids, and we head to Newport, we always take them to Aquidneck Lobster Co. It%26#39;s on Bowen%26#39;s Wharf right off Thames St. and it%26#39;s filled with large, water filled wooden pens with lobsters of all sizes. Kids always love it, it%26#39;s free, and you can even plan to buy some to have crated up and take back or shipped home. If a local could chime in and let you know it%26#39;s still open on that Saturday...? Cliff walk will be cold, but if you%26#39;re bundled up, it%26#39;s always enjoyable. Park by 40 steps and walk to the right for awhile to get behind the Breakers mansion. Again, free. We%26#39;d always stop in to Ochre Court, a mansion now used as Salve Regina University%26#39;s administration building, to get a free peek at the architecture of one of Newport%26#39;s ';cottages';. It%26#39;s Christmas break, though, so don%26#39;t know if they lock the little side door to the left of the main ones....Also, Bretton Point on Ocean drive has nice paths behind the park bldg. that leads to a stone tower with stairs you can climb for a nice view. Free as well. Do the kids play tennis? I%26#39;m not sure of their winter hours, but the Tennis Hall of Fame is on Bellevue and although not free, it%26#39;s good to see.

Also, try the website christmasinnewport.org They list everything for the holiday season. You might be able to get a better feel for what your kids would like. The holiday train might be fun - I%26#39;ve never done it so can%26#39;t advise...

Sorry, CTCHarlie - holiday fatigue brought on a typo - it%26#39;s Brenton Point. Also, Bowens wharf is of of Americas%26#39; Cup before it turns onto Thames. My bad.

How about a seal watch cruise with Save The Bay?

They have a 10am and 11 am cruise scheduled for both Sat. and Sun.

Got some good tips above. Also, while the mansions might be booring to alot of kids, perhaps the Marble House or the Elms would hold their interest long enough. unlike the Breakers which is a guided tour, these are self guided. you get an i-pod like device to wear, and then you press different numbers to learn more about each room....for exmple you%26#39;ll press 1 to get an overviewe of the room for about a minute, and then you can press other numbers to find out more details (like apicture might have a number attached to it, or a piece of furniture, etc...) It%26#39;s a little more interactive for kids than the Breakers.

Alsso, the Mariott hass a big gingerbreadd house in the lobby if you%26#39;re in the area.

Also, on Long Wharf there is a shop called Goodies by the Sea which has lots of vintage candy as well as the modern stuff....we always see kids with smiles on their faces there.

Also down on lower Thames St, just before the Yacht Restoration School, there is a Magic/Joke Shop...I think it%26#39;s open year round, if any of your kids are into that sort of thing. And as somebody previously mentioned, Ryan Family Amusements (Arcade)

    Newport New Years Eve 2009

I will be going to Newport for New Years this year and was hoping to get some advise on what the bar scene will be like. There is a group of 6 of us, 25-29 years old, and looking for a place with a live band or something like that. I%26#39;ve tried to search for a website for the Pelham or some of the other places on Thames but was unsuccessful. I knew a few years ago, they were doing $75 deals for food and booze all night. Anything like that this year?

    Newport New Years Eve 2009

In addition to what Will gave you, The Gas Lamp Grille has ';Those Guys'; a popular Newport cover band. They say to stop by or call for tickets:

    www.gaslampgrille.com

Not sure if it%26#39;s all inclusive though like the 5th%26#39;s is.

NYE for couple - first trip to Providence

Husband and I are taking a short train trip to Providence to stay 2 nights including New Year%26#39;s Eve.

We%26#39;d like to have a nice meal and celebrate in a fun bar, but looking for something a little more low-key than typical club scene on New Year%26#39;s.

We%26#39;re looking at the Hilton, Westin, or Marriott Courtyard. Renaissance looks booked.

Suggestions of the best located hotel a few places within walking distance to eat/celebrate?

Love Italian %26amp; fish %26amp; it looks like Federal Hill is the right location.

    Thanks!

NYE for couple - first trip to Providence

Have you considered staying at Hotel Dolce Villa on Federal Hill?

NYE for couple - first trip to Providence

the hotel dolce villa is your best choice, its centrally located.its within walking distance from great restaurants like mediterraneo, which has a latin club upstairs(maybe not your kind of thing) or SMOKE a new high energy smoking lounge/bar/club.they are all owned by the same person.
