South Dakota fans in Providence

There will be a group of us volleyball parents that will be in Smithfield at Bryant U., for a tournament, Nov. 14 and 15th. According to our schedule we will have some time on Friday before a 4:00 game to do some sight seeing. I have read somethings about a ';riverwalk';? Would this be something that you would suggetst? Are there restaraunts on this riverwalk? Where would be the best place to park as we will have rentals? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I have fond memories of living in Omaha and even Valley, NE for four years in the early nineties...go big red- made a football fan out of me.

Too bad you didn%26#39;t have more time so you could see Newport, the jewel of RI. I would say Prov dowtown is about the size of Omaha, but unlike that city, isn%26#39;t surrounded by cornfields--just a lot more crazy traffic.....uugh. There is a Riverwalk downtown, near the Prov Place Mall, but in the off season it%26#39;s a little more low key. Most tourists also go to Federal Hill, where all the Italian eateries are, and head over to the East Side, which is also next to downtown, abutting the Riverwalk- Benefit Street highlights the best of Colonial New England, and the Thayer Street area which is sort of the hub of Brown U. and RISD.

I hope you have a good time in our tiny little state, and remember- it%26#39;s a bag not a sack, a soda not a pop, and a sub/hero is a grinder. Like you have steaks, we have clams. And we are considered friendlier than the other New England states.

Also--you could park at the Parking Garage at Providence Place Mall.

I would like to echo Hillside%26#39;s recommendations. While the riverwalk is nice, it%26#39;s really much more enjoyable during the warmer months when Waterfire and the concerts are going on. Still a pretty park for a stroll though. If your looking for very authentic italian cuisine, then head over to Federal Hill and stroll along Atwells Avenue. Seeing that you%26#39;ll be seeing the city pre dinner time, I might skip it and just head over to the East Side. Walk up Meeting St. until you reach the corner of Benefit St. This is where you can pick up a map of historic Benefit Street at the Providence Preservation Society. Wander along Benefit and admire some of the best examples of early colonial/federal style homes in the nation. There%26#39;s also a small park nearby on Congdon St. that has a statue of Roger Williams looking out over the downtown. Great spot for taking pictures of the downtown below.

Heading further up the hill will take you to Thayer St. Thayer is the main thoroughfare through Brown and RISD. Lots of fun, one of a kind type shops there. Plenty of food choices as well. If your looking for a place with great sandwiches, try the Meeting Street Cafe on the corner of Thayer and Meeting streets. Huge sandwiches that can easily be split by two people. Enjoy your visit.

Since you have a car you could ride to the Providence Botanical Center. It is an indoor greenhouse of tropical plants. It is near the Roger Williams Park Zoo. Roger Williams zoo is also worth seeing. The parking is free at Roger Williams Park.

We really don%26#39;t know what our schedule will be like on Saturday. It is possible that we will have a morning game and will be done for the rest of the day. So, if we do have time to drive into Newport, what do you suggest to do there? It looks like a neat area!

I think your whole clan will love Newport. Take a drive along Ocean Drive and walk the Cliff Walk. Tour a mansion like The Breakers. Then go park the car opposite the Visitors Center and explore Thames St, Americas Cup Ave, Bowen%26#39;s and Bannister%26#39;s wharf. Great shopping, galleries and restaurants there. Newport restaurant week runs through the 15th so that might entice you to try one of Newport%26#39;s excellent restaurants on a discount. Much to see and do for a day trip.

Wow! That sounds amazing. Thanks!
