My husband and I are planning a driving trip starting in Baltimore. We thought we%26#39;d drive straight from Baltimore to New Haven (expect about a 6 hour drive?) and stop to tour the Yale campus. After our tour and lunch, we plan to continue North and stop in Mystic, where we%26#39;ll spend the night. (What%26#39;s the drive time between New Haven and Mystic?) I know Mystic is a favorite destination, but I could use some suggestions on restaurants and attractions. The next day (time depending on how much there is to see in Mystic), we plan to continue to Newport, where we would like to tour a mansion (or two) -- any specific suggestions? We%26#39;ll spend the night in Newport, then drive directly back to Baltimore the next day (Does anyone know the drive time?). Appreciate your suggestions on any of these locations...this is our first time to Connecticut and Rhode Island, and we need to get a flavor of those states in just three days!
Trip to Newport, stops in New Haven and Mystic along the way
That first day seems a little ambitious- the whole route is some of the most challenging driving in the US- why Yale? New Haven isn%26#39;t really the greatest city, although it is interesting and there are some great free museums there as well.

I kind of agree with Hillside in that I would eliminate the New Haven part of your trip if possible. If it were me, I%26#39;d just go straight to Mystic. Once there, you can check out Mystic Aquarium, and Mystic Seaport, where they have some old ships you can go on board and tour. There%26#39;s also Mystic Village, which is a collection of shops made to look like an old time village. My wife loves to shop there, and we%26#39;ll probably be heading there ourselves before the holidays.
If you decide to eat lunch in Mystic, there%26#39;s Jamms which is OK, or the Steak Loft which I believe to be much better. I haven%26#39;t eaten there myself, but have been told by people I know that it%26#39;s very good.
With the limited time you%26#39;ll have in Newport, the mansions I would suggest you visit are The Breakers, Marble House, The Elms, and Rosecliff. Can%26#39;t go wrong with any of these IMO. However, The Breakers is the one you surely don%26#39;t want to miss. I won%26#39;t try to describe it here, but let%26#39;s just say that after seeing it, you won%26#39;t soon forget it.
In Newport, we have had great meals at The Red Parrot, and Pier 49, but I would suggest you check out the TripAdvisor ratings, which is a fantastic resource. There are so many good restaurants there that cater to many tastes, and you%26#39;re sure to find something that suits you.
Have a great trip!
Appreciate the suggestions! New Haven isn%26#39;t a ';must stop'; -- I just thought we%26#39;d be ready for a stop at that point.
Does anyone have an idea of the drive time from Baltimore to Mystic?
6 hours to Mystic, add another hour to Newport.
